Should I Expect to Pay for a Quote, Plans or Designs?

This is a question we hear all the time, and rightfully so. When you're starting a renovation or building project, it's not always clear what you're paying for — and when. Some companies offer free quotes, others charge for initial meetings, and when it comes to plans or designs, costs can range from included to pretty surprising. Here's a breakdown of what you should expect when dealing with different parts of the industry — and some of the lessons we’ve learned the hard way.

Quote, Plans or Designs. What You Can Expect to Pay For — and What’s Usually Free
Interior Designers
If you’re hiring an interior designer, expect a consultation fee upfront. It’s usually a set rate and gives you a chance to meet, talk about your space, and see if you’re a good fit for each other. Most designers will outline their fee structure during that first meeting. From there, costs can include design boards, sourcing, space planning, and often managing some of the project as well. They’re offering a creative and tailored service, so their time is valued and priced accordingly.
Renovation Quotes
When it comes to renovations — especially general contracting like what we do — it's common not to charge for the quote itself. We don’t. A clear, detailed quote is part of earning your trust, not a product we sell. That said, if detailed drawings or engineered plans are needed for pricing, that may come with a cost from someone else involved (like an engineer or designer). But the initial renovation quote should be free and straightforward, and if it's not — ask why.
Engineers, Architects & Designers
Structural engineers will often have a fee just to come out, assess, and provide guidance. If drawings are needed, that's usually an additional cost. Architects or architectural designers typically charge for everything from initial visits, designs, drawings, managing permits, and more. Some include a few rounds of revisions, but not always — and extra changes can cost you. The pricing here can vary a lot, so ask for clarity before signing on.
A Personal Story From Us
We’ve had to learn the hard way. In our early days, we partnered with a design company without asking the right questions. The client was billed for a set of plans that they thought were included, and it put us all in a tough spot. Since then, we make it a point to be transparent with our clients — and we always encourage you to ask about what’s included, what isn’t, and when costs start to build. It’s better to know early than be caught off guard later.
FAQs
Q: Is it normal to pay for a quote from a renovation company?
A: No — most of the time, renovation companies will provide quotes at no charge. If one is charging you, ask what that fee covers and whether it will be credited back if you go ahead with the work.
Q: Do I have to pay for designs before I even decide to move forward?
A: With interior designers, architects, or engineers — usually yes. Their work is in the creative and technical planning, and that’s a service they charge for. Some include early conceptual work in a package, others bill hourly. Just make sure you understand what you’re getting before you pay.
In Short
Most of the time, quotes are free — but designs, drawings, and expert assessments are not. Just make sure you're asking the right questions up front. Transparency is everything.
